CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT (Stop 0x00000101)
An expected clock interrupt on a secondary processor core was not delivered within the allocated time interval, pointing to CPU core lockup or instability.
Internal desktop parts run on harmless 12V DC voltage and cannot shock you. Simply unplug the wall power cable first, then touch the unpainted metal case frame to ground static electricity.
Common Symptoms & Tells
- Stop code 0x00000101 on blue screen
- System completely freezes; mouse cursor stops moving instantly
- Sound buzzes violently through speakers or headphones
Interactive Fix Checklist
0 of 5 steps completedSafety power-off and discharge
Shut down the PC, turn off the power supply rocker switch (O), and unplug the AC power cord from the wall outlet. Press the front power button once while unplugged to discharge residual capacitor energy before touching any internal components.
Reset BIOS settings to factory defaults
Clear all CPU multiplier adjustments, manual voltages, and power limits in to verify stock processor stability.
Update motherboard BIOS firmware
Motherboard manufacturers release updated AGESA (AMD) or microcode (Intel) firmware specifically addressing inter-core communication deadlocks. CRITICAL SAFETY: Never turn off, reset, or unplug the PC while the update is flashing. A power interruption during EEPROM write will corrupt the firmware and brick the motherboard.
Check CPU operating temperature and mounting pressure
Extreme core temperatures (>100°C) or uneven cooler bracket mounting pressure can cause CPU cores to hang.
Run Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool or Prime95
Stress test individual CPU cores. If a specific core consistently halts while others continue, the CPU has a degraded physical core and requires RMA.
