CPU TjMax Thermal Shutdown and PROCHOT Throttling Triage
Diagnose processor thermal throttling at Intel/AMD TjMax temperature boundaries (100C-105C) and emergency PROCHOT hardware thermal shutdowns.
Internal desktop parts run on harmless 12V DC voltage and cannot shock you. Simply unplug the wall power cable first, then touch the unpainted metal case frame to ground static electricity.

Shut down the PC, turn off the power supply rocker switch (O), and unplug the AC power cord from the wall outlet. Press the front power button once while unplugged to discharge residual capacitor energy before touching any internal components.
Monitor per-core temperatures and PROCHOT in HWInfo64
Launch HWInfo64 in Sensors-only mode, run Cinebench or game, and watch Core Max and PROCHOT flags. Intel chips throttle at 100C-105C; AMD Zen 4/5 chips throttle at 95C. Shutoff occurs at roughly 115C.
Verify cooler peel sticker was removed
A transparent plastic peel sticker left on the copper cold plate of the CPU cooler prevents direct heat transfer. Warm up CPU with a brief workload beforehand, then gently twist cooler left and right to break thermal paste vacuum before removing. Inspect base, peel plastic film if present, clean, and repaste.
Check cooler mounting standoff torque and backplate
Uneven mounting pressure causes poor thermal contact. Ensure LGA1700 or AM4/AM5 standoffs are screwed down completely and cooler retention screws are tightened diagonally in criss-cross pattern until hand-tight.
Apply high-quality non-conductive thermal paste
Clean old paste with 99% isopropyl alcohol. Apply a pea-sized dot or thin X pattern of quality thermal paste (Noctua NT-H2, Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut, Arctic MX-6) across the integrated heat spreader (IHS).
