GPU Hotspot Junction Temperature Limit and Shutoff Triage
Troubleshoot thermal emergency shutdowns triggered when Hotspot (Junction) temperature hits 105C-110C while average core temperature appears normal.
Internal desktop parts run on harmless 12V DC voltage and cannot shock you. Simply unplug the wall power cable first, then touch the unpainted metal case frame to ground static electricity.

Shut down the PC, turn off the power supply rocker switch (O), and unplug the AC power cord from the wall outlet. Press the front power button once while unplugged to discharge residual capacitor energy before touching any internal components.
Monitor GPU Core and Hotspot delta simultaneously
In HWInfo64, observe Temperature and Hotspot Temperature under 3D load. A normal delta is 10C to 15C. A delta exceeding 25C indicates thermal paste pump-out or uneven heatsink contact.
Inspect rear X-bracket retention screws
Check the four spring-loaded screws securing the heatsink to the core on the backplate. Gently tighten each screw diagonally half a turn at a time to equalize mounting pressure.
Repaste GPU die with phase-change PTM7950 pad
Direct-die bare silicon GPUs pump out standard thermal paste within weeks. Disassemble heatsink, clean die, and apply Honeywell PTM7950 phase-change pad or high-viscosity paste (Thermal Grizzly Aeronaut/Kryonaut Extreme).
Replace degraded VRAM thermal pads
Inspect GDDR6/GDDR6X thermal pads for oil weeping or tearing. Replace with precise manufacturer-thickness pads (usually 1.0mm, 1.5mm, or 2.0mm) to prevent pad thickness from lifting the cold plate off the core.
