GPU TDR Timeout Detection and Recovery Registry Tuning
Tune Windows Graphics Driver Timeout Detection and Recovery (TDR) parameters to prevent premature resets, black screens, and nvlddmkm recovery freezes.
Internal desktop parts run on harmless 12V DC voltage and cannot shock you. Simply unplug the wall power cable first, then touch the unpainted metal case frame to ground static electricity.
Common Symptoms & Tells
- Screen goes black for 2-4 seconds during intensive 3D gaming or rendering
- Display recovers with notification: Display driver stopped responding and has recovered
- Windows Event Viewer logs Event ID 4101 from source Display
Interactive Fix Checklist
0 of 5 steps completedBack up the registry before editing
Before making any registry changes, open Registry Editor (Win + R, type regedit, press Enter). Go to File > Export, set Export range to All, and save the .reg backup file to your Desktop. This allows a full restore if something goes wrong.
Navigate to GraphicsDrivers registry key
Press Win+R, type regedit, press Enter, and navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers.
Create and configure TdrDelay value
Right-click in right pane, select New -> DWORD (32-bit) Value, name it TdrDelay, double-click it, set Base to Decimal, and enter Value data: 8. This increases the timeout threshold from default 2 seconds to 8 seconds.
Create TdrDdiDelay value
Create another DWORD (32-bit) Value named TdrDdiDelay, set Base to Decimal, and set Value data: 8. This grants DirectX additional time to recover without resetting the driver.
Clean install graphics driver with DDU
Reboot PC into Safe Mode, run Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) to wipe all remaining display driver registry entries, and install clean latest WHQL driver package.
