Improper thermal pad thickness on laptop VRM and VRAM
After cleaning or repasting a gaming laptop, incorrect thermal pad thickness prevents the heatsink from making contact with the CPU/ silicon dies.
Internal desktop parts run on harmless 12V DC voltage and cannot shock you. Simply unplug the wall power cable first, then touch the unpainted metal case frame to ground static electricity.
Common Symptoms & Tells
- Laptop was running 75°C, but after user repasting immediately hits 100°C on desktop
- Laptop shuts down 1 minute into booting any 3D game
- Thermal paste on CPU shows zero spread when heatsink is reopened
Interactive Fix Checklist
0 of 5 steps completedSafety power-off and discharge
Shut down the PC, turn off the power supply rocker switch (O), and unplug the AC power cord from the wall outlet. Press the front power button once while unplugged to discharge residual capacitor energy before touching any internal components.
Replace solid pads with high-conformability Thermal Putty
Laptops use non-standard pad thicknesses (0.75mm, 1.25mm). Replace stiff silicone pads with moldable thermal putty (Upsiren U6 Pro, ZT-PY6, CX-H98) that compresses perfectly.
Check heatsink screw numbering sequence
Laptop vapor chambers have numbered screw brackets (1 through 8). Always tighten in sequential order 1, 2, 3... to prevent the vapor chamber from cocking at an angle.
Inspect copper heat pipes for vapor seal rupture
If a copper heat pipe gets bent or punctured, the internal vacuum and distilled water escape, turning the heat pipe into a useless hollow tube.
Elevate rear laptop feet by 1 inch
Propping up the back of the laptop with a book or laptop stand provides 30-40% more airflow intake through bottom vents.
