Motherboard case fans stuck at 100% speed (jet engine noise)
PWM 4-pin fans are configured in legacy DC Voltage mode in the , feeding a constant 12V rail that forces the fan motors to run at maximum RPM non-stop.
Internal desktop parts run on harmless 12V DC voltage and cannot shock you. Simply unplug the wall power cable first, then touch the unpainted metal case frame to ground static electricity.
Common Symptoms & Tells
- Case fans scream at maximum RPM immediately upon booting into Windows
- Adjusting fan curves in Windows software has zero effect on fan noise
- Fan noise is deafening even when CPU temperature is at cool 30C idle
Interactive Fix Checklist
0 of 5 steps completedSafety power-off and discharge
Shut down the PC, turn off the power supply rocker switch (O), and unplug the AC power cord from the wall outlet. Press the front power button once while unplugged to discharge residual capacitor energy before touching any internal components.
Switch fan header mode from DC to PWM in BIOS
Restart PC and tap Del to enter . Open Q-Fan / Smart Fan / Hardware Monitor. Locate each fan header (CHA_FAN, SYS_FAN) and change control mode from 'DC' to 'PWM'.
Verify 4-pin PWM fan header connection
Check the fan cable header on the motherboard. Ensure 4-pin PWM fans are plugged into all 4 pins and not misaligned across 3 pins on the connector.
Install Fan Control open-source software
Download free open-source 'Fan Control' by Rem0o. Run the setup wizard to detect all motherboard and sensors and create quiet custom stepped fan curves.
Check CPU temperature sensor readout in BIOS
If reads CPU temp as 99C while the heatsink is cold, the temperature probe is uncalibrated or disconnected, forcing safety failsafe 100% fan speed.
