NVMe SSD Hardware Write-Protect Read-Only Lockout Recovery
Identify and handle NVMe permanent hardware write-protection triggered by internal drive controller firmware when flash memory endurance is depleted.
Internal desktop parts run on harmless 12V DC voltage and cannot shock you. Simply unplug the wall power cable first, then touch the unpainted metal case frame to ground static electricity.
Common Symptoms & Tells
- Cannot save, edit, or delete files; Windows reports: The disk is write-protected
- Changes appear to succeed but revert back completely after rebooting PC
- Diskpart attributes disk clear readonly reports success, but drive remains read-only
Interactive Fix Checklist
0 of 4 steps completedCheck disk read-only attributes in Diskpart
Open Command Prompt as Administrator, run diskpart, type select disk X (replace X with drive number), and detail disk. Note whether Current Read-only State displays Yes while Read-only displays No.
Attempt software read-only clear
Run command: attributes disk clear readonly. If Current Read-only State remains Yes after this command, the write protection is enforced at hardware controller firmware level, not Windows software.
Check SSD health in vendor utility
Launch vendor utility (Samsung Magician, WD Dashboard). If Percentage Used reaches 100% or endurance limit is exceeded, modern NVMe controllers permanently lock into read-only mode to prevent silent data corruption.
Recover data and replace drive
Because the drive is safely locked read-only, all existing data remains readable. Copy all files off the drive to a new , as hardware write protection cannot be reversed once tripped.
