NVMe SMART Available Spare Threshold and Critical Warning Triage
Diagnose NVMe predictive hardware failures when Available Spare drops below threshold or Critical Warning flags indicate imminent flash exhaustion.
Internal desktop parts run on harmless 12V DC voltage and cannot shock you. Simply unplug the wall power cable first, then touch the unpainted metal case frame to ground static electricity.
Common Symptoms & Tells
- CrystalDiskInfo displays yellow Caution or red Bad status banner for NVMe
- Available Spare percentage drops below the factory threshold (typically 10%)
- PC experiences random 30-second system freezes and slow application launch times
Interactive Fix Checklist

Open CrystalDiskInfo or smartctl command line. Check Available Spare, Available Spare Threshold, Percentage Used, and Media and Data Integrity Errors.
Immediately back up all personal data
When Available Spare falls below threshold, the drive has exhausted its reserved flash NAND blocks. Immediately copy all critical documents, photos, and game saves to an external USB drive or cloud storage before controller lockout.
Check Critical Warning byte flags
If Critical Warning byte is non-zero, bit 0 indicates spare capacity warning; bit 1 indicates extreme temperature; bit 2 indicates degraded reliability; bit 3 indicates read-only mode.
Retire and replace SSD
Once Available Spare threshold is breached, the cannot relocate new failing NAND cells. Replace drive and restore backup image to ensure data safety.
