Virtual memory (Pagefile) placed on a slow secondary HDD
Windows is swapping pages to a slow mechanical hard drive rather than the primary NVMe/, causing massive system stutter whenever fills.
Internal desktop parts run on harmless 12V DC voltage and cannot shock you. Simply unplug the wall power cable first, then touch the unpainted metal case frame to ground static electricity.
Common Symptoms & Tells
- Severe 5-second freezes when switching between open applications
- Mechanical secondary hard drive makes loud clicking/seeking noises during window switching
- Commit charge in Task Manager exceeds physical
Interactive Fix Checklist
0 of 5 steps completedSafety power-off and discharge
Shut down the PC, turn off the power supply rocker switch (O), and unplug the AC power cord from the wall outlet. Press the front power button once while unplugged to discharge residual capacitor energy before touching any internal components.
Check Virtual Memory allocation drive
Press Win+R, type 'sysdm.cpl' → Advanced tab → Performance Settings → Advanced tab → click 'Change' under Virtual Memory.
Move pagefile to high-speed NVMe/SSD
Uncheck 'Automatically manage paging file size'. Highlight mechanical drive letters (e.g., D:) and select 'No paging file' → Set. Select (C:) and choose 'System managed size' → Set.
Reboot computer to apply new paging layout
Restart Windows to delete the legacy pagefile.sys from the mechanical hard drive and allocate it on fast flash storage.
Ensure adequate RAM capacity
If your workload regularly exceeds physical , adding an additional 8GB or 16GB stick permanently eliminates pagefile swapping lag.
