RAM running in single-channel mode (memory bandwidth cut in half)
Memory modules installed in improper motherboard slots force single-channel operation, crippling integrated and CPU gaming performance.
Internal desktop parts run on harmless 12V DC voltage and cannot shock you. Simply unplug the wall power cable first, then touch the unpainted metal case frame to ground static electricity.
Common Symptoms & Tells
- CPU and utilization stay low in games while framerates drop severely
- HWiNFO or CPU-Z reports Channel: 1 x 64-bit instead of 2 x 64-bit (or 4 x 32-bit DDR5)
- Only one stick is installed, or two sticks placed in adjacent slots
Interactive Fix Checklist
0 of 5 steps completedSafety power-off and discharge
Shut down the PC, turn off the power supply rocker switch (O), and unplug the AC power cord from the wall outlet. Press the front power button once while unplugged to discharge residual capacitor energy before touching any internal components.
Install RAM sticks in slots 2 and 4 (A2 and B2)
When installing two sticks on a 4-slot motherboard, place them in the second and fourth slots from the CPU socket to engage dual-channel mode.
Verify matching memory pairs
Using two sticks with wildly mismatched capacity or speeds forces the motherboard into asynchronous flex mode with reduced throughput.
Enable XMP / EXPO / DOCP in BIOS
DDR4 and DDR5 run at baseline 2133-4800MHz JEDEC speeds out of the box. Enable the manufacturer profile in to run at rated speeds.
Upgrade single-stick prebuilt systems
If your prebuilt PC or laptop arrived with a single 8GB or 16GB stick, adding a matching second stick increases memory bandwidth by 80-100%.
