SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (Stop 0x0000007E)
A system thread generated an exception that the kernel error handler did not catch, predominantly caused by outdated hardware device drivers.
Internal desktop parts run on harmless 12V DC voltage and cannot shock you. Simply unplug the wall power cable first, then touch the unpainted metal case frame to ground static electricity.
Common Symptoms & Tells
- Stop code 0x0000007E, often naming files like nvlddmkm.sys, atikmdag.sys, or RTKVHD64.sys
- Repeated blue screen reboots during Windows startup
- Occurs following a Windows Update or driver installation

Note the '.sys' file listed below the stop code. For example, nvlddmkm.sys is Nvidia, atikmdag.sys is AMD, and netwtw10.sys is Intel Wi-Fi.
Boot into Safe Mode and roll back driver
Boot into Windows Safe Mode, open Device Manager, right-click the corresponding hardware device, select Properties → Driver tab → Roll Back Driver.
Reinstall latest chipset and BIOS firmware
Download latest motherboard chipset INF drivers and audio drivers directly from the manufacturer motherboard support page. CRITICAL SAFETY: Never turn off, reset, or unplug the PC while the update is flashing. A power interruption during EEPROM write will corrupt the firmware and brick the motherboard.
Run DISM image repair
Execute 'dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth' in Command Prompt to fix corrupted system driver stores.
