Motherboard VRM (Voltage Regulator Module) overheating and throttling
An entry-level motherboard lacking VRM heatsinks throttles a high-wattage CPU down to 800MHz because power MOSFETs exceed 115°C.
Internal desktop parts run on harmless 12V DC voltage and cannot shock you. Simply unplug the wall power cable first, then touch the unpainted metal case frame to ground static electricity.
Common Symptoms & Tells
- CPU temperatures are fine (60°C), but CPU clock speed suddenly drops to 800MHz during heavy load
- HWiNFO reports 'VRM Temperature' or 'Motherboard Temperature 4' above 105°C
- Plastic smell emanates from upper left corner of motherboard
Interactive Fix Checklist
0 of 5 steps completedSafety power-off and discharge
Shut down the PC, turn off the power supply rocker switch (O), and unplug the AC power cord from the wall outlet. Press the front power button once while unplugged to discharge residual capacitor energy before touching any internal components.
Direct an airflow fan onto the motherboard VRM area
AIO water coolers provide zero airflow over the socket. Position a small 80mm or 120mm fan blowing directly over the naked MOSFETs near the CPU socket.
Enforce strict TDP power limits in BIOS
In , manually set CPU Long Duration Power Limit (PL1) to 65W or 95W so the board's unheatsinked power phases are not overwhelmed.
Attach aftermarket adhesive mini heatsinks
Apply small aluminum or copper heatsinks with pre-applied thermal adhesive tape to the bare black square MOSFET chips.
Switch from liquid AIO to a top-down air cooler
Top-down air coolers (like Noctua NH-L12S or Thermalright AXP) blow direct exhaust air over the surrounding motherboard VRM capacitors and chokes.
